Checking your Mac’s firmware

hat particular model is notorious for not updating its firmware. Although the current version is shown in the Hardware Overview in System Information, that doesn’t tell you whether it’s up to date. There’s a listing of current firmware versions at, or simpler still the free utility SilentKnight from will check automatically for you. If it isn’t up to date, all you can do is download the latest Combo macOS installer and install that. Apple only releases firmware updates as part of macOS installers and updates, and doesn’t provide any other means of fixing out–of–date firmware.
