The early years of the 20th century were a turbulent time for Russia: the Black Sunday massacre and defeat in the Russo-Japanese War had tarnished the image of the monarchy. Rapid industrialisation had created a new middle class and a new, urban working class, both of whom wanted more representation in government. The country was riven with strikes and social unrest, while a new, radical art movement created revolutions in painting, sculpture, architecture and the performing arts.
The Tercentenary was seen as the perfect opportunity to re-establish the ancient bond between the Tsar and the people and to re-affirm the principle of autocracy by divine right.
