Q How can I reduce draughts on bare floorboards? I live in a cottage in rural Scotland and we really feel the cold here. I want to be prepared this year. Abigail Burton, Fife

I am visualising the scenario – old pine floorboards with big gaps between, supported on floor joists, all with a void below down to the sub-base. Airbricks around the outside walls keep the sub-floor void well ventilated, but unfortunately also feed icy draughts up through the gaps between the boards!
