Still knitting

“KNITTING IS THE saving of life” sounds like something that any contemporary knitter could breathe, with a sigh of relief, as they slump into an armchair at the end of a difficult day. It has become my mantra as, needles in hand, the day’s cares are ravelled along with the yarn in a precise and comforting rhythm.

I am not alone. In recent years, ‘knitting is the saving of life’ has become much quoted on knitting blogs, and has even been incorporated in some fetching tattoos. The quote originates, though, from the early 20th century. The writer Virginia Woolf penned the words in a 1912 letter to her husband. Knitting had been a lifeline for her during an illness.
