Covering some 250 square miles, Kielder Water & Forest Park (www.visitkielder.com) is home to the largest working forest in England and northern Europe’s biggest constructed lake.

The park has three visitor centres, from which you can enjoy all sorts of activities, and visitors flock to the area to enjoy the famously dark skies and the rare ospreys – 2020 is the 12th successive year of ospreys breeding in Kielder Forest.

About 50% of England’s native red squirrel population lives here, looked after by a number of red squirrel rangers, who work around Kielder Forest. The rangers monitor populations and make sure the forest remains free from
