‘Life is just a bowl of cherries,ʼ sang Judy Garland in the fifties. That could mean itʼs sweet, sour or really hard in the centre. Where better to make up my mind than Ficksburg, cherry capital of the world – or so the locals would have you believe. The Cherry Festival, which has been running since 1967, is the oldest agricultural celebration in the country but sadly wonʼt be happening this year.
