BEARING WHEEL INSTALLATION

Whether you are installing a new disc brake kit, or just refurbishing your original setup, getting the proper tools and knowhow to do it right is a must for reliability. Let’s dig into the details!

There are two basic types of Beetle wheel bearings. The older “ball bearing” style, and the more modern “roller bearing” type. (Please see photos.) Most mechanics (and engineers) agree that the roller style are the most robust and reliable. You’ll probably only find roller-style bearings installed on older “king and link pin” front ends. These front ends pretty much used the same bearings from day zero all the way through the 1965 model year.
