About 30 kilometres from Darwin sits a prison. There’s not much colour or sound in the eerie place, with one exception: a flock of noisy corellas who’ve decided to make Darwin Correctional Centre their home.

These chattery creatures are the namesake of Birds Eye View, a podcast shining a spotlight on the prison’s female inmates. It’s a clever play on words: the podcast introduces listeners to the friendly local wildlife, but also shows a new perspective on women in prison, documenting their memories, reflections and everyday routines, while also highlighting the unfair differences between the treatment of male and female prisoners (of the 1000-plus inmates at the Darwin centre, just 80 are women).
