The first road sign heralding our thrilling adventure announced Trans-Kalahari Highway, signifying the motorway that crossed the Kalahari Desert. The warning behind it seemed a bit redundant; it merely stated “Sand.” We were heading off on a three-week road trip in southwest Africa, in the country of Namibia, in search of the classic African safari experience: spotting wildlife in its natural habitat.
This visit to Africa was a compromise of sorts. My wife Larissa is into nature, while I’m more comfortable with concrete under my feet and asphalt under my wheels. However, I’ve dragged her to enough car museums that when she suggested Africa (with a certain “look” in her eyes),
