John Charles Dollman (1851–1934) is probably best remembered for two paintings: , originally titled , of which the primary version is in the Museum of London, and , which belongs to the Cavalry and Guards Club. The second shows the famous self-sacrifice of Capt Lawrence Oates ‘going outside' into the Antarctic blizzard in the forlorn attempt intended to allow Scott and the others to survive. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1914 and a preliminary sketch, now in the Scott Polar Research Institute, was sold for £40,000 by Christie's a century later. Two weeks ago, a second preliminary watercolour (), measuring 23¼in by 39in, made £33,800 at Sworders of Stansted Mountfitchet. In the finished work, for added drama, the artist omitted the ski-sticks Oates carried in the sketch and added a touch of light coming from the tent.
