Technostalgia
It’s a familiar story. Boy meets The California Kid, boy falls in love, boy spends rest of his life trying to find The California Kid, and everyone lives happily ever after. Only in this case, ‘boy’ is retired Cooper / Avon Tyres engineering shift manager, Pete Moore, and the car he’s ended up with isn’t just another copy of Pete Chapouris’ iconic ’34 coupe. For a start, it’s a ’33, but that’s largely a matter of semantics when it comes to a car as heavily modified as this.
Now before you start writing to us pointing out all the differences between Pete’s car and Pete’s car, allow me to expand. Or allow Pete to. “I watched The California Kid in the late ’70s. A load of friends came round as they were in a different ITV region and it wasn’t showing on their network. After that I just always wanted a ’34 coupe.”
