SENSIBLE SHOES

Many times we’ve commented in CCB on how the likes of the MGB GT and Triumph GT6 were effectively replaced by the hot hatch, as epitomised by the Golf GTI. The Golf offered the same attributes a keen driver with a family was after: namely, sports car pace and glamour coupled with the practicality to transport toddlers and pets.

As time went on though, the hot hatch became the default choice and started to look a little too sensible itself. Indeed, most period road tests of a GTI, whether Peugeot or Volkswagen, will inevitably contrast it with another three-door fuel-injected hatchback festooned with red striping. And when the Golf GTI gained four doors, the sensible nail had been driven well and truly home.
