Always take the weather with you

CAN swallows really predict the weather? One doesn’t make a summer, but I still have three chicks in residence and having their flying lessons. I have never seen them so late in the year—perhaps we are in for a fine autumn. Nick Kinver, by email

A team effort

THERE seems to be a misconception of how rural churches are run (and ). Our vicar serves five churches, miles apart. Each parish has its own dedicated team of volunteers, who open and close the church, clean and keep the graveyard tidy and carry out minor maintenance. Without these stalwarts, many churches would be permanently shut. With Covid-19, we open our church two days a week for private prayer, but it would be impossible to deep-clean each day.
