OVERSEAS SUPPORT

The value of well-placed naval assets was again demonstrated in the aftermath of the massive explosion which devastated the port area of Beirut. The accidental detonation of ammonium nitrate being stored in a port warehouse on 4 August resulted in at least 180 deaths, 6,000 injuries and tens of billions of dollars worth of damage.

The survey ship HMS Enterprise was despatched from Cyprus with emergency supplies, and also charted the depth of the water and mapped underwater features of the harbour approaches to help the Lebanese authorities safely reinstate port operations.
