SPIERS OF MELKSHAM AN APPRECIATION BY MICHAEL MARSHALL
Sadly, the firm sold-out to a larger concern over 20 years ago now and the once familiar brown and red lorries are just a memory, so I thought it would be nice to look-back at some of the motors the firm operated by way of a tribute.
It all started in 1931, when a 19-year-old William Arthur (Bill) Spiers purchased his first lorry; a second-hand Chevrolet, and set himself-up in road haulage. Bill was soon joined by his elder brother Albert – they also had a sister – they had tragically lost their mother at the young age of 38.
Bill was determined to do something to help the plight of his younger brother and sister and had saved-up enough money to purchase the Chevrolet lorry for £45. He had made useful contacts at the Avon India Rubber Company in Melksham and they became one
