‘We have to be greedy’
KICK OFF: You are the first coach in South African football history to win five league titles. Often we don’t celebrate individual achievements enough in this country, but you must be proud?
I am humbled, thankyou. But nobody achieves these things alone without the help of other people. Of course my job is to create a map of where a trophy is, make a plan for how we think we should go get it and navigate the players as if they are on a treasure hunt. But the players do the work, we [coaches] don’t play football, we guide. So I must give credit to the players and their families, who have been patient with us. We had our own bubble [for a month] at Royal Marang in Rustenburg and then we went to the bio-bubble in Gauteng, the first to arrive and the last to leave. We had been away for more than two-and-ahalf months. So the families have been very understanding with us, that we had to take the fathers, husbands, boyfriends from home. And my technical team, I needed a lot of people to help me with this because there were high expectations with the ambition of the club. You cannot do this alone and we want to be greedy, we want to win everything. For that you need resources and so I must thanks the club, Dr Patrice Motsepe and his board. And of course, my family, my wife [Moira], for understanding who am I and what I love. But my wife knows this, she found me as a football person from an early age with my mother, whose family grew up around
