Between 1909 and 1915, the British anthropologist Northcote Whitridge Thomas (1868–1936) conducted expeditions in modern-day Nigeria and Sierra Leone, both then part of the British Empire. He photographed local people, recorded their music and stories on wax cylinders, and collected artefacts of everyday life.
Thomas’ archives are held in various institutions, including the University of Cambridge’s Museum
