OBITUARIES

PAT SMULLEN

THE nine-time Irish Flat champion jockey died on 15 September aged 43 from pancreatic cancer.

Born in Co Offaly in 1977, Pat enjoyed early success on the track, being crowned champion apprentice in 1995 with 26 winners. He retained this title the following year, and in 1997 enjoyed his first Group One win, on the Tommy Stack-trained Tarascon in the Moyglare Stud Stakes.

In 1999 Pat succeeded Mick Kinane as stable jockey for trainer Dermot
