‘CORRUPT’ LIST: THE CADRES REJECT IT

The ANC appears to be losing the opening round in its fight to clean up its tainted image as party members and office-bearers challenge their inclusion on the lists of people with outstanding issues, and defy the party’s requirement that they step aside.

Following the last meeting of the party’s national executive committee (NEC), the ANC headquarters instructed provincial leaders to provide audited reports on members accused of wrongdoing for a decision on whether they should step aside from their positions or appear before the party’s integrity commission. This step was meant to be the ANC’s most forthright signal that it was responding to public outrage about corruption, and was now ending the era of impunity.

But with lists of names compiled by provincial executive committees, those who face the chop are rejecting the step as
