Chelsworth’s Secret

George Brunswick Smyth was raised in Chelsworth and became a youthful Redcoat, arriving in Australia in 1837 – two years after Melbourne was founded – and went on to become one of its foremost citizens. He was a magistrate and a military juror, a police captain and a justice of the peace. He founded The Melbourne Club – the home of our business community – and the Port Phillip Turf Club, the home of the Melbourne Cup and the Melbourne Cricket Club.

Although not born in England his sentiment to Chelsworth remained in his heart. His first land purchase in Melbourne, situated along the Yarra river, he named Chelsworth. It is now the beautiful Chelsworth Park surrounding Ivanhoe Golf Course. His mark on Melbourne is evident to this day through the institutions he helped to establish.
