Mini engine breathing systems

A great many Minis are modified or have had larger or uprated engines fitted to them over the years and it continues to be the case. This is all part of the fun of owning a Mini and always was; there is still so much that can be done to tailor the car to your individual taste. Nowadays many people are returning Minis to original condition or making sure that the mods made are in-period for the car.

Concours and unrestored original Minis should of course be maintained in that condition. When tuning is carried out it will usually mean a change of carb or the fitting of twins. When an 848 or 1098cc Mini has a larger 1275 non-S engine fitted the block is of a different design to the original in that it will not be fitted with tappet chest inspection covers and this means that the breathing system will need altering to work with the new unit. There is also potentially a problem when different SU carbs are fitted as not all were designed to accept breather pipes.
