FLY THE HUMPTY BUMP

The humpty bump is a fun and versatile maneuver. The two primary humpty bumps, or “humptys”” as they are often called, are the pull-pull-pull and pull-push-pull versions.

Each starts by pulling up and maintaining a perfect vertical upline, the same way you’d set up a hammerhead, but the throttle is not reduced since a lot of power is needed to cleanly loop over the top of the humpty. Consequently, with power applied, expect to need some right rudder to counter the left-turning effects of the propeller slipstream during the upline. The exception would be if a strong crosswind necessitated left rudder.

The upline should be maintained for a count of “one thousand, two thousand, three thousand, four thousand” to establish a consistent tempo that will help you place rolls along the upline later on. Next, pull or push the elevator smoothly to initiate a half loop over the top. The ease of the loop
