The Great Royal Road which ran from Stockholm to Abo in Finland in earlier times was the primary means of communication between the Swedish king and his Finnish provinces. As the State developed, and the need for effective, regular contacts with the farflung areas of the kingdom increased, the route across Aland was developed, which meant that Aland inevitably became an important part of the Great Royal Road.
