Engine builld – timing gear

LAST month the flywheel, camshaft and lower rocker assemblies were installed in the engine block. We now need to time the camshaft with the crankshaft so that it opens and closes the inlet and exhaust valves at the correct time in relation to the piston positions. To achieve this we’ll fit number 1 exhaust valve and set its tappet clearance to 0.010 inch and then use a dial test indicator (DTI) on the valve head to confirm its position as the camshaft is turned.
