DNA CASE STUDY

This time the case comes from reader Peter Cope. Peter writes:

Dear Karen

I’ve found your recent articles on DNA very interesting. Would it be worthwhile me undertaking an Ancestry DNA test?

‘Should I take an Ancestry DNA test?’ Karen’s reply:

The simple is yes, definitely!

What does Peter know?

Peter has already taken a Y-DNA test with FamilytreeDNA with mixed results (see FT August 2019). Despite searching for 20 years he has been unable to take his paternal male line back further than his 2x greatgrandfather Thomas Cope who died in Stratford, West Ham, in March 1844 aged 30.

In the 1841 Census his age was shown as 25 so Thomas was probably born about 1813. Unfortunately, all Peter knew,
