Clearly, a love story, set against a backdrop of life in Germany in the 1930s between a German girl and a German Jewish boy, is going to be traumatic – and it is a nerve-wracking and gripping read.
Interestingly, novelist Louise Fein chose to create a protagonist, Herta Heinrich, who was a young German girl, from a strongly Nazi family. She did this to allow her to take us, the readers, inside Herta’s head and see the unfolding events of the time through her eyes.
