From the King’s Writ of Bastardy issued by King Henry III in 1235 (establishing that children born before their parents were married were illegitimate and therefore could not inherit) to the Civil Partnerships, Marriages and Deaths (Registration etc) Act of 2019, our ancestors’ lives have been governed by legislation.
