The easy drive MF 35
When I was a child growing up in the late Seventies there were still plenty of Massey Ferguson 35 tractors at work. Here in the hills of North Wales, the farmers didn’t tend to go out and buy the latest tractors, and certainly, the small-time farmers would often use tractors that were 15 years old or more. To me, knee-high to a grasshopper, the MF 35 seemed an ordinary-sized tractor, and several neighbouring farmers had one as their main working farm tractor, as did my older brother Wil.
Early influence
At the time I was nine years old, and I was totally unaware of what make and model the tractor was. All I knew was that it was red and had ears like Mickey Mouse. The tractor had its headlights positioned on the top of the bonnet and to me, those lights looked just like a pair of little round mouse ears. It was only years later when I began to take a more technical interest in tractors that I discovered that Wil’s tractor was the three-cylinder version of the 35, with the Perkins diesel engine.
