STOVES THAT RUN on butane/propane gas canisters are by far the most popular for backpacking and wild camping. It’s easy to see why. They are simple to use. There’s no liquid fuel to spill or that needs to be ignited to prime the stove. They also boil water fast and simmer well. Depending on the design they’re suitable for year-round use. Canisters in various sizes are easy to obtain in many places. When empty they can be recycled (Jetboil makes a tool called the CrunchIt for puncturing canisters safely to ensure they’re empty). With a good stove a 250-gram canister can last well over a week for solo cooking.
