Lights out: the crisis facing Britain’s hostels

HOSTELS have been among the businesses hardest hit by the coronavirus crisis – and with government support for the tourism sector coming to an end in the autumn, many are now facing permanent closure.

A survey conducted by the Scottish Independent Hostels (SIH) network found that more than half of its members were likely to close with a year of current government assistance coming to end, and many were unlikely to last that long.

In the survey, 21% of SIH members said they would close
