The US Navy destroyers involved in separate fatal collisions in June and August 2017 have both returned to service after lengthy repairs and modernisation. USS Fitzgerald sailed to rejoin Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 1 at her homeport of San Diego on 13 June after spending two years at the Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula.

In addition to having her impacted spaces repaired, Fitzgerald’s radar and electronic warfare suite was replaced and her combat systems were upgraded. At around the same time, USS John S. McCain resumed operations with the 7th Fleet, three years after her collision that killed ten sailors.
