Q I am tempted to invest in one of the uprated alternators that are widely offered today, but what are the downsides?

The up and downsides of an uprated alternator rather depend on the car you intend to fit it on and what was originally fitted. Take the dynamo on an MGA, B or Midget that may only deliver a maximum of 22 amps at higher engine rpm. This is why, back in the days of dynamo cars being used as daily transport, owners would often suffer drained batteries in winter following regular use, driving in slow, stop-start traffic
