Stuart Walker owns his own vehicle recovery business S.S. Walker, based in Peterculter to the west of Aberdeen.

“My father was a haulage contractor” he explained. “When he retired in 1986 he sold his fleet to local company Freeland Freight Services. He liked Leyland trucks, particularly the Roadtrain, and at its peak the company operated several vehicles including articulated lorries and tippers.”

Stuart worked with his father for some time, but eventually decided to start up on his own.

“My first lorry was a Bedford KM tipper,” he recalls. “I then bought several more tippers, until I decided to change direction and concentrate on garage recovery work. My wife and son are also involved in the business, and we celebrated our fortieth wedding anniversary in May 2019.”

Stuart currently uses several lorries to carry out the day job, including two Volvos and a DAF. The vehicles are all 18-tonners and equipped
