Table manners

Daniel Hellman and Eric Chang turned a hobby into a furniture brand, which is particularly well known for its dining tables. are a departure from collections featuring sharp angles and taut lines. “They are a bit softer but still carry the aesthetics we are known for, gracious lines and the focus on negative space,” says Chang, who handles the company’s creative direction. Often drawing inspiration from the automotive and fashion worlds, Hellman Chang of late has been thinking more about boats. The bow table has a “bit of nautical approach to it,” he says, as does the new Facet Dining Chair, which juxtaposes “sharp lines and sinewy curves.” Chang and lead designer Zach Jenkins work with 3D programs and printers to create new designs and prototypes, which helps visualize pieces from multiple angles. Now built in Georgia, the furniture is made with US-sourced hard woods such as walnut, oak and maple, as well as imported sapele, offered in 20 finishes. The Bow Table on is in walnut with an open pore finish and has a mat white lacquer accent applied over a maple substrate.
