MOTOR RAIL DUMPERS PART 1

The classic tractor-based site dumper from the 1930s to the 1960s was the Muir-Hill but it had rivals, of which perhaps the best known was the Motor Rail. This unusual name derived from the firm’s earlier speciality of quarry railways. Founded in 1911 as the Motor Rail and Tram Car Co of Simplex Works, Bedford, it made light narrow gauge tracks and the Simplex locos and rolling stock to work on them. Large numbers were supplied to the War Office in 1914–18 for clearing the spoil from trench digging and for building gun emplacements and the like.
