MF 188 BUYERS’ GUIDE

Engine

The Perkins A4.248 engine was launched with the MF 178 and received a slight power increase from 72.5hp to 75hp (BS) at a rated speed of 2000rpm with the launch of the MF 185 and MF 188. The engine features a 101mm (3.977in) bore and, importantly, a 127mm (5in) stroke, which assists in generating 299Nm (221 lbf ft) of torque at a lowly 1300rpm. A Lanchester balancer unit is included in the specification, minimising vibration of this relatively long stroke engine.

There are no specific issues with this engine and with careful maintenance (original engine service interval 125hrs), eight to ten thousand hours of operation can be expected before a major rebuild is required. The former is usually confirmed with plumes of white smoke on engine start-up, which eventually clears.

Check the coolant for a visible level and check for any leaks around the coolant hoses and drips coming from the water pump. Viewing the radiator in its entirety can be difficult, as an oil cooler obstructs much of the area behind the removable grill door. Therefore the radiator
