Finally, it took a global pandemic to shake up the cycling calendar. For many years, a growing movement has criticised the structure of the sport - its business model and its calendar. The coronavirus crisis has done nothing to help with the former, but it has impelled the sports’ stakeholders to bodge together a calendar that owes everything to necessity and very little to coherence, logic or narrative.

Of course, the 2020 race calendar is an emergency one, and the biggest caveat of all is that it could collapse completely if covid-19 flares up again. This is less a model for alternatives than cycling recognising that it simply doesn’t matter what form the racing is better than no racing.
