Beat/ Monsieur Jarre, you initially published the Eōn app for Apple devices only. Don‘t you like other smartphones?
Jean-Michel Jarre/ The world seems to be divided into two tribes: the Apple world and the rest (laughs). And neither one seems to be very neutral towards each other. I‘ve always belonged in the Apple camp - like so many other musicians. The reasons are not just technical: Apple has this certain creative connection. So it was obvious from the start, with a project like Eōn, to supply the iPhone and the iPad - although, of course, an Android version will follow soon.
Beat/ When did you start using the Mac for your music?
Jean-Michel Jarre/ This was in the early days of the first Macintosh. Later, I was one of the first musicians to use the Macintosh II on stage to display my sheet music. I also used the Mac early on to create computer graphics during performances.
Beat/ Where does your fascination for technology come from?
It must go back to my grandfather, André Jarre. My father Maurice (Maurice Jarre wrote the music for films like „Lawrence of Arabia“ and „Doctor Zhivago“, editor) left my mother and me when I was five years old. So my grandfather was my real father figure. He was an engineer and inventor - for example, he developed one of the first mixing consoles. He also invented the „Teppaz“, perhaps the world‘s first portable record player - a predecessor of the iPod, so to speak. I guess he developed that device just to be able to listen to his Édith Piaf records everywhere (laughs). My grandfather also gave me my first cassette recorder when I was eleven years old: a Grundig. I was obsessed with it and recorded everything that made a sound. There was a train
