Dick Johnson’s recollections of hitting the rock have been well-documented over the years in these pages, his biographies and many other publications besides. If you’re reading this magazine, we reckon you know his version of events pretty well. There was also AMC’s forensic analysis of the XD Falcon racer’s homologation and development in issue #50. We will hear Dick’s reflections at the end of this story, but our aim here is to examine the circumstances of the day he rocketed to fame with fresh eyes.
