ESSENTIAL GUIDE Introducing Stuffed Quilting
“If you enjoyed last month’s feature on corded quilting, then this month’s exploration of stuffed quilting will be the perfect companion.”

WHAT IS STUFFED QUILTING?
Stuffed quilting is also called trapunto, which is derived from the Italian word for quilt, trapunta. Stuffed quilting is a decorative technique worked on two layers of fabric – much like corded quilting – and creates a raised, puffy look on the surface of the work. It combines well with corded quilting. Traditionally, it was worked on white fabric, although in this article you will see other colours and subtle prints used as well. Some stunning examples are often seen in quilt shows, and its historical roots go back centuries. There is a related technique called boutis (also referred to as Provençal quilting), which is worked more like corded quilting, with channels of wool or cord laid side by side to fill a shape. Boutis is a meticulous and time-consuming method of producing high relief texture. In this article, however, we will focus on simple stuffed quilting, supplying some simple designs for you to try and describing its basic aspects.
