    MY HUSBAND,Alex, grew up building. His parents were owner builders on an off-grid bush property, and at 16 he helped build his own bedroom. He had previously shared a room with his siblings, which he had also helped build. One year later, he left home.

    I suppose it was possible he would choose a totally different path, but right from the moment we met, he talked about the house he was going to build. Getting a mortgage and paying it off couldn’t have been further from his mind. He wanted land and to create a home naturally and sustainably.
