Ten years ago, DStv needed a channel that would address the viewing needs of its black viewers. MultiChoice was at that time still quite a white space, with content geared towards white audiences, and Mzansi Magic was a much-needed breakthrough.
Nkateko Mabaso, chief executive of M-Net, says: “There was a gap in the black segment in terms of their content experience. We were the first to launch a telenovela, Inkaba. Before that, everyone was doing soaps. We introduced a new format to South African viewers and now we’re at a point where we’re actually exporting formats to the rest of the continent.”
