WE MUST ACCEPT THAT CLUB OWNERS HAVE THE RIGHT TO SELL

Since 2016, the PSL has approved nine change of ownership deals involving clubs across the premier and first divisions. Bidvest Wits and first division campaigners Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila are the latest parties to have reached an agreement over the purchase of a top-flight status.

The transaction is expected to kick in next season, subject to the PSL executive committee approving the imminent sale.

However, Wits’ prospective new owner Masala Mulaudzi’s confirmation last weekend that he had acquired the status of Bidvest Wits has been met with mixed reactions.

While those with a sentimental attachment to Wits argue that the move is akin to eroding the history of the 99-year-old institution, status-buying transactions are common in local football.
