MBOWENI FACES WAGE BATTLE

Finance Minister Tito Mboweni (pictured) seems headed for another major clash with South Africa’s trade unions as he stands firm on plans to cut the public sector wage bill when he tables his emergency budget on Wednesday.

Mboweni’s eagerly awaited address – set to be delivered before a joint sitting of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces on Wednesday – was necessitated by the havoc wreaked on the country’s finances by the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

Treasury spokesperson Mashudu Masutha-Rammutle said: “The proceedings will go ahead as a normal sitting of Parliament, with strict adherence to Covid-19 guidelines.”

With threadbare resources, Mboweni has already warned that the country will have to work with a zero-based budget.
