Following government’s announcement that schools’ management would return to work on May 11, reports emerge that only some schools in the Western Cape and Gauteng are ready to reopen.

Renewed debate on the issue peaks on May 19 after the national command council approves the reopening of schools on June 1.

DA federal chairperson Helen Zille tweets in support of opening schools: “Dear Sadtu [the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union]. Young people are not at mortal risk from Covid, unless they have a serious underlying condition such as diabetes. What is more, the latest scientific evidence is that children do not pass the virus to adults. Time to open schools. Back to work for you guys!”
