‘Basihlisile isidima sam.” These were Bulelani Qolani’s chilling words after he was forcefully evicted while naked from his shack in Khayelitsha in an incident witnessed by the world. It was a poignant moment that raised eyebrows and questions about his rights as a South African, and recourse for social justice after his undignified eviction.

It was also a subtle question about the efficacy of the state’s governance in “healing divisions of the past” and improving the quality of life as a commitment to social justice.
