When the richest tech company in Cupertino launched its ‘AirPods’ in 2016, the cordless earphone’s ability to reach iPhone levels of ubiquity was vastly underestimated. A meme pointing out swam laps around the Internet, and though wireless earbuds weren’t a totally new concept at the time, thanks to the various reports of them being flushed, swallowed and put through the washing machine, consumers took a sceptical approach.
