WRECKED & Rated MBUK

HOW WE TEST THE KIT

Starts with a detailed product check in the workshop. We strip and rebuild, checking for any problems. Next we hit the trails… hard! We test in real riding conditions for the complete picture. And finally we re-test with another tester.

WHY OUR TESTS ARE THE BEST!

Our test team is made up of some of the most respected bike and kit testers in the world. We have unrivalled knowledge and experience, and spend a vast amount of time making sure we get it right. We tell you the truth and aren’t influenced by PR or advertisers.

ABOUT OUR TEST TEAM

Our technical-editor-in-chief, Rob Weaver, gets new products in as soon as they’re available and coordinates all the testing through our vastly experienced band of reviewers, who have decades of riding and testing experience.

Lezyne Mega Drive 1800i front light £150

This 1,800-lumen light is a decent weight (250g) for an all-in-one design, especially given its machined aluminium body. It attaches via a secure rubber-strap mount. The three LEDs reach quite far down the trail and their white colour helps to pick out detail, but the beam’s brightness reduces fairly abruptly to either side, rather than dimming gradually. This works fine paired with a helmet light, but limits how fast you can ride using the Mega Drive alone, making it hard to spot turns. Battery life is decent (one hour and 44 minutes on full power). What sets it apart is the extra functionality provided by Lezyne’s app and add-ons. Grab your phone and, instead of cycling through the full menu – including disorientating flashing settings – you can program the button to only access the modes you need off-road. The optional remote button (£14) makes it easy to change settings on the fly, but isn’t wireless. A plug-in battery pack (£80) doubles the run time. Add Lezyne’s KTV Pro Smart 75 rear light (£35) and you can sync it with the front and change modes on both. For off-road riding, there are lights with a better-spread beam – and we’ve scored it accordingly – but the app and add-ons make it a contender if you need long battery life or ride a mix of trails and tarmac. Watts Occuring
If you want maximum assistance – in terms of both peak power and torque – combined with long range, then a ‘full-fat’ motor powered by a large-capacity battery is the way to go. The drawback is extra weight – although this makes less difference if it
