“THIS IS OUR WAVE AND I’M NOT READY!” Tom shouts. The announcer gives a 30-second warning and the 100-or-so riders around us begin to look serious. We’ve been in the country for less than 24 hours and have nearly missed the start of the three-day race we flew 9,000km for. With 94km of the Berg & Bush Descent ahead of us, we’ve no choice but to crack on. As we join the peloton of riders, 800 more are already making their way along the dusty road ahead.
