    TREVOR WARD: Italy has a well-established gran fondo scene and the daddy of them all is the Maratona dles Dolomites, which has been taking place every summer since 1987. It’s been successfully run by a committee of locals from the Alta Badia region in all that time, and the main man is a wonderfully eccentric eco-warrior called Michil Costa who rides a penny farthing dressed in tweed and would have cars banned completely if he could.
